The STOCKTON San Joaquin Lions Club invites you to a display of the Helen Keller Mural Project during regular hours at the Margaret Troke Library, 502 W. Benjamin Holt Dr., Stockton March 1-31, with a special showcase event for the whole family on Saturday, March 29, 1-4:00 PM!
The San Joaquin Lions Club proudly hosts the Helen Keller Mural Showcase on Friday, March 29th, 2024, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. This inspiring event highlights the intersection of art and advocacy, featuring a stunning mural created by local disabled artist Diana M. Buettner and the empowering advocacy work of Jennifer Gass, a blind Lions Club member and activist championing the rights of the blind and disabled. Together, they bring Helen Keller’s legacy to life, celebrating her remarkable contributions to equality and education as we approach the 100th anniversary of Helen Keller challenging the Lions Clubs to become ’Knights of the Blind’ on June 30, 2025.
1:00 - 4:00 PM:
Children and adults will have the opportunity to participate in educational activities focusing on blindness, disability awareness and Helen Keller’s life.
1:00 - 1:45 PM:
Refreshments, sponsor tabling With activities, and a chance to meet the creative team and supporters.
1:45 PM:
Amelia Lewis will open the program with remarks about the significance of International Women’s Day and the culmination of this month-long celebration through the mural showcase.
Jennifer Gass and Diana M. Buettner will follow, sharing personal insights into their respective roles as advocate and artist, and highlighting the importance of inclusion and creative expression. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session.
2:15-4:00 PM:
Enjoy popcorn and a screening of the timeless film ”The Miracle Worker” (1962). This cinematic classic captures Helen Keller’s groundbreaking journey and serves as a tribute to the potential for resilience, advocacy, and creative collaboration to make lasting societal impacts.
Heartfelt thanks to the SJC Chapter National Federation of the Blind, SUSD’s Walton Special Center, Margaret Troke Library and others for helping to make this mural project and showcase possible. Your commitment to community enrichment and fostering meaningful connections makes it possible to honor the legacy of Helen Keller and amplify the voices of advocates and artists alike.
