How do you smell?
This 1 day event and workshop will bring together leading researchers in olfactory display technology from the UK, Italy, Sweden and Japan. Despite being one of our key senses, smell is challenging to utilise in measurable ways. Yet it is fundamental to most peoples’ lives and to how we navigate and interpret our environment and relationships.

Agenda

10am - 1pm: Presentations

2pm – 5pm: Workshop
Olfactory displays are already being explored for application in well-being, clinical treatments, fashion, product promotion, public transport, cosmetics, curation, narrative environments, performance, film, gaming, art installation and design for public spaces. With devices that can distribute smell in a programmed way and at a wide range of scale, from the intimate to the architectural, there is now great potential for its use across a spectrum of creative applications.
At this event the latest research in this field will be on display, with presentations in the morning exploring the development and current trends in olfactory technology, including sensors, olfactory displays, virtual reality, digital, hacked and non-digital forms. In the afternoon, workshop demonstrations offer hands on experience of this technology and the opportunity to discuss with the creators how these may be applied in different contexts.
This is an exciting time to engage with the possibilities for advancing olfaction into new areas so if you are interested do come along to explore its potential for your own research and creative purposes, and to see how you might smell in the future.

Organised by Tokyo Tech, Nakamoto Lab.
