In this fourth annual lecture marking International Mother Language Day (www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day), Professor Leilani Tuala-Warren will be sharing her reflections on growing up with parents who each spoke a different mother language (father Samoan and mother Urdu/Hindi), and how school life in Samoa elevated English as the dominant language.
This lecture will show how her identity was shaped by navigating home languages alongside an education system that favoured the English language above all others.
She will then go on to consider the impact of English dominance in education and what it means to reclaim and value the languages that form our roots and influence our sense of belonging, our identity, and the importance of honouring mother languages in a globalised world.
