The Diaspora Vibe Afrobeat Allstars have planted their afrobeat based groove in the South Florida music scene. Join us for a night of world music infused with funk, soul, and jazz!
The Betsy presents the longest (continuously) running jazz series in Miami, with a jazz performance space at a concert Steinway intimately situated inside the lobby adjacent to LT Steak and Seafood. Patrons come to the hotel to hear traditional Jazz, discovering performers that define the genre broadly, from traditional to eclectic, and including globally inspired world music. An annual series called ‘The Betsy’s Overture to Overtown’ celebrates South Florida’s important role in the emergence of American jazz. Jazz singer Carole Ann Taylor is community curator.
“The Betsy Hotel proudly presents musicians on International Jazz Day 2024 whose inspiration is drawn from the historic Overtown, a place frequented by Louis Armstrong, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday. In its heyday, it was known as ‘Harlem of the South,’” says Jonathan Plutzik, owner of The Betsy Hotel. “We celebrate this legacy annually with our Overture to Overtown series, through our live jazz program nine times a week, and for all time by including Langston Hughes’ work on our Poetry Rail.”
The Betsy’s 2024 International Jazz Day shines light on Florida jazz history in partnership with these participating sponsors: Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, City of Miami Beach, Florida International University Miami Beach Urban Studios, Plutzik Goldwasser Family Foundation, the Betsy Community Fund at The Miami Foundation, and the Jorge Perez Foundation CreARTE Program.
