??????????, a meditation on inter-dependent coexistence, initiates the Festival’s overture to choreographers Jos Baker (UK/Belgium) and Dimo Kirilov Milev (Netherlands/Bulgaria). More than the idea that no man is an island, his interbeing is tied to every creature and object offering nourishment, protection, kinship, a sense of identifying. ?????????? is thus equally a declaration of being in the present, to carry on and keep making.
Addressing the immediate conundrum, Baker’s work ??????????? explores how the body remains vital when the future brings restricted travel, where touch is banned and physical proximity turns dangerous. Intermingling mundane, intimate rituals of everyday life with eloquent physicality, Baker crosses multiple mediums in search of the essence of communication.
In ????????, Milev uses the simplest instruments to generate layers of subtle intimations. Lure or guide? Provocation or plea? Tender offering or a game of discards? With every gesture to yield, resist, stretch and evade, the work invites audiences to arrive at their own conclusions.
???????? and ??????????? were first presented online as works-in-progress in late 2020. The entire choreographic process remains as purely virtual experiences for the choreographers, and will be the Company's first experiment with creating, rehearsing and premiering new works for a live audience, without the choreographers being physically present.
