dadageek is a non-profit community of immersive artists and electronic musicians. Our mission is to offer education and community to those creating at the intersection of art, interactive media, and tech. Our community is filled with talented and creative technologists with a passion for sharing their expertise with others.
What is this course about?
Explore the world of digital art creation through TouchDesigner, a powerful tool for generating visuals for live music performances, interactive installations, audio-reactive art, graphic design, and more. This course delves into fundamental concepts essential for harnessing TouchDesigner’s node-based networks to create compelling visual content. There will be 4 sessions that meet once a week, followed by an exhibition of student's work scheduled for December 6th.
What is TouchDesigner?
TouchDesigner is a powerful visual programming environment created for artists and technologists looking to explore generative and interactive visual content creation. It is used internationally by artists, programmers, creative coders, software designers, and performers to create immersive performances, large-scale installations, and interactive artworks.
What will I learn?
Students in this course will walk away knowing:
An understanding of the basic operators in TouchDesigner: TOPS, SOPS, and CHOPs.
How to manipulate visual data with simple Python commands.
Designing visuals through instancing; a core principle of TouchDesigner.
Other cool tricks like feedback loops and displacement from the TOP operators.
How to make your visuals audio-reactive.
It's ok if none of these sound familiar or make sense yet. If you like the way TouchDesigner graphics look, these are the first things you need to learn to get started in the software.
Who is this course for?
Students who enroll in this course are:
Working artists looking to add new technology to their toolset,
technologists and programmers looking to explore creative approaches to tech,
musicians looking to add audio-reactive visuals to their music, and
anyone interested in the intersection of art, tech, and design!
This course is tailored for beginners and individuals new to TouchDesigner. However, those with intermediate experience can still benefit from refining their skills and discovering new techniques.
What is the class like?
Each class session will meet once a week at dadaLab; our headquarters in East Austin. The class is capped at 18 students so you will have plenty of opportunities to connect with your instructor and ask questions.
