Beyond The Surface: Erratic Landscapes of "The Californias"

Info: An INSITE Conversation on Political Ecology with cultural critic T.J. Demos and curator Andrea Torreblanca. This conversation will focus on how natural phenomena and human ecology shape societal and political discourse and collective imagination. Erratic landscapes, or shifting habitats that erode or regenerate over time, are the result of the influence of citizenship, geopolitics, and social justice on the environment. The critical geography between California and Baja California has been fueled by a collective imagination oriented by the notions of a "promised land" and utopia, obscuring the impact of industry, economy, and power struggle on local ecosystems, and consequently, on human rights.

Afterthoughts: Mining History

Info: An INSITE Conversation with artists Mark Dion, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Simmons, and Yukinori Yanagi, moderated by art historians Derrick R. Cartwright and Sally Yard. More than two decades after creating landmark commissions for INSITE (1994, 1997, and 2000), this Conversation reunites artists Mark Dion, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Simmons, and Yukinori Yanagi to reflect on their earlier projects and the works presented in the exhibition Erratic Fields. The discussion will encompass remastered versions and new iterations of their original commissions, together with recent works that have developed out of their research in California. Drawing on myth, fiction, and poetics, as well as the complexities of social ecologies and aesthetics, these artists have profoundly shaped how we understand the natural environment and its intersections with cultural history.
