Rachel Duckhouse’s printmaking practice focuses on etching and drawing, inspired by the physical and psychological experience of being in a particular place at a particular time. Drawing on the architecture of interior and exterior landscapes, Inside Up presents etchings made following a two-month residency at the University of Alberta’s Printmaking Faculty in autumn 2024, where Duckhouse was Artist in Residence.
The exhibition explores connections between the University’s brutalist Fine Arts Building and the North Saskatchewan River system beyond. Staircases, wall textures and architectural forms intertwine with imagery of river valleys, waterfalls and receding glaciers, with themes of suspension and erosion emerging through the processes of printmaking.
Rachel Duckhouse was awarded the inaugural June Carey Scottish Printmaking Award at the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition in 2025. Production of Inside Up has been supported by the prize, including a year’s membership at Glasgow Print Studio.
Duckhouse is an artist-printmaker based in Glasgow. Her work is held in collections including the British Museum, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
