About this Event
Join us for a special evening at the Royal Academy as British artist Emily Powell discusses the heart of her practice: painting en plein air — directly in the landscape, immersed in the shifting light, weather, and energy of the world around her.
From windswept coastlines of the Scilly Isles to the quietness of a garden at dusk, Powell’s vibrant, colourful and expressive canvases captures the spirit of the places she encounters. Her approach is as much about emotional resonance as visual record, weaving colour, spontaneity, and a deep sense of place into a body of work that feels alive and immediate.
Powell will be joined in conversation by arts writer and critic Fiona McKenzie Johnston, who will explore the evolution of Powell’s distinctive style, the challenges and rewards of working on location, and the ways in which landscape painting continues to shape contemporary art practice.
This event promises to be an inspiring insight into creativity, place, and process — and an opportunity to hear first-hand from one of Britain’s most exciting painters working today.
