About this Event
Join the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal for the next event in its webinar series, “Scrubbing the Skies: The Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change.” The series focuses on scientific, technological, legal, political, and justice-focused issues associated with carbon dioxide removal, and is hosted by Co-Director Wil Burns.
Overview:
In November 2022, California State Senator announced his intention to introduce the California Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act in the 2023 state legislative session. In January, that bill went live as SB 308, and marked the real world arrival of a new caliber of ambitious, net zero aligned policy proposal to support CDR demand. The legislation, as law, would require California to reach annual carbon removal targets in alignment with its existing net zero law, creating a new precedent for how states can intervene to create clear standards and escalating demand for carbon removal. The bill passed in the State Senate in 2023, and currently a diverse coalition of organizations is working to repeat this success in the Assembly in 2024.
In this webinar, core members of the SB 308 coalition will share background on the legislation’s substance, history and political standing, and details on how activists in California and globally can take part in the ongoing campaign to make it law.
