UK business invests more than £130 billion a year in knowledge assets or intellectual property (IP), and IP rights protect around just £63 billion of these assets.
Intellectual Property is the collective term for creations of the mind and the fixed formats in which they can be protected which include trade marks, patents, registered designs and copyright. And 90% of enterprise value attributed by the stock market is underpinned by intangible assets.
But what are the benefits of identifying and recording IP – well it demonstrates management skills to investors, potential partners, licensors and a range of other interested third parties; can provide income streams (e.g. licensing, entering adjacent markets); may help identify related tax benefits such as R&D tax credits; and reduce the risk of third party litigation.
