About this Event

Program Overview

Location: New Bedford Art Museum
Schedule: Wednesdays, May 27-June 17, 2026
Time: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Tuition includes four in-depth sessions from design to final prints.

This four-week workshop offers a rare opportunity to study printmaking with master printmaker and retired Professor of Fine Arts Adrian Tió, an artist with over 50 years of professional experience and work held in major collections including the Andy Warhol Foundation and the White House.

Inspired by the exhibition RESISTANCE: Cultural and Political Narratives in Mexican Art, participants will explore how artists use printmaking to express identity, memory, and social commentary.

Working from initial concept to final print, students will develop original designs, carve linoleum blocks, and produce a series of prints using professional techniques. The workshop culminates in a collaborative piece, where individual prints come together to form a larger collective work.

Designed for both beginners and artists looking to deepen their practice, this course emphasizes process, technique, and visual storytelling. Participants will work closely with an accomplished artist while drawing direct inspiration from the Museum’s galleries.

No prior printmaking experience is required.

Course Structure

Session 1: Introduction & Inspiration
An overview of relief printmaking and its role in storytelling and social commentary. Participants will visit the galleries to study the exhibition and begin developing ideas through sketching and visual research.

Session 2: Design Development & Carving Foundations
Students refine their concepts and transfer designs onto linoleum blocks. Instruction will focus on composition, contrast, and line quality, followed by an introduction to carving tools and techniques.

Session 3: Carving Techniques
A focused studio session dedicated to carving. Participants will develop control, mark-making, and more advanced approaches while progressing their blocks.

Session 4: Collaborative Printing
Participants will ink and print their blocks using professional methods. Individual prints will be combined into a collaborative final piece.

Possible formats include:
Print Quilt: Small prints assembled into a unified grid composition
Layered Print: Overlapping prints creating a dynamic, multi-color work

Participants will leave with their own prints and documentation of the collaborative piece.
