Presentation Topic: You Can’t Delegate Your Way Into Understanding AI
Abstract: Many organizations have purchased AI tools, but they have not yet achieved meaningful AI adoption. They have access, scattered usage, and promising experiments, but the operating model has not changed. The missing layer is executive AI judgment: the practical ability to understand what AI can do, where it fits, where it fails, and how it should reshape work. This session will help leaders move beyond generic prompting and tool demos into the mental models that make AI useful: augmentation before automation, context design, model selection, memory, connectors, skills, agents, and trust-by-design. We will translate those fundamentals into practical adoption patterns for leaders in critical infrastructure and other complex organizations, showing why serious AI adoption starts with leadership fluency before it becomes workflow redesign.
Key Takeaways
- Most organizations have bought AI access, but have not put in the work to drive true AI adoption.
- Executive AI judgment comes from hands-on use against real leadership work.
- AI should be treated first as an augmentation technology, not an automation shortcut.
- “Agentic AI” is powerful, but dangerous as a buzzword if leaders do not understand the primitives underneath it.
- The safest adoption path is not “turn on tools and hope.” It is context, permissions, review, and progressively higher-value workflows.
- Employees can improve the work, but it's up to leaders to redesign the work.
