Cultural Insights:
- In Japanese textile traditions, indigo dyeing (aizome) was highly valued for samurai clothing, kimonos, and workwear, as the natural indigo had antibacterial and insect-repellent properties.
- Indigo artisans maintained vats that were passed down through generations, carefully nurturing them for decades or even centuries.
- This is the inspiration for the community vat we’ll be using during this program. An indigo vat is a large container filled with a fermented indigo dye solution, allowing fabric to be dipped, oxidized, and dyed. Unlike surface dyeing, indigo binds with fabric through multiple dips, creating richer and deeper tones over time.
