WHAT IS AN UNCON?An "uncon" (short for unconvention) is a participant-driven gathering where the people attending decide on the topics, structure, and discussions—rather than having a pre-set schedule of panels, lectures, or speakers.
Note: This isn't a craft event. Instead, it's focused on all the things an author has to do that aren't writing, with the hopes that we can all figure out how to be more efficient and effective.
The Indie UnKCon will be a chance for the writers in the Kansas City area to start their 2026 by spot checking and peer coaching our current collective pain spots. Having problems working TikTok? Can't figure out where to start with print special editions? Have some great tips for growing newsletters or keeping readers engaged?
Get your a** in this room and let's move forward together.
WHO IS THE HOST?
Kendrai Meeks (aka Killian McRae) is a midlist indie author, first self-published in 2011 and with over 40 titles to her name(s). She's been places, seen stuff, and knows people... but it may not be the same places, stuff, and people as other indies. She's importing this concept of a peer-to-peer seminar from previous expierences, and in coordination with other members of the indie community in the hopes of creating a place for us all to network, engage, and improve our business practices and acumen.
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?
Like it says above... there isn't one. BUT once we're in the room together, based on who is in need of what kind of coaching, expect this:
8:00 Open doors and introductions
8:30 Topic Brainstorming & First Session Selections
9:30 Break-Out Session #1
11:00 Reconvene, Review, Discuss
12:00 Lunchbreak
1:30 Second Session Topic Selection
1:45 Break-Out Session #2
3:15 Reconvene, Review, Discuss
4:15 Local Resources Quick Pitches and Community Lightning Tips
5 ish Informal Networking and Close Out
6:00 Close doors
LOCATION:
Kendrai is currently finalizing these details and they will be announced shortly. The event will be held within 10 miles of the Kansas City limits, if not in the city itself.
WHAT TO BRING:
Note taking supplies, lunch (if you want to network in the room - you can always go out if you prefer), and business cards. I'll provide some name tag stickers, but I highly encourage you to bring your own from any other event you've attended (cons, panels, etc. - they serve as a great conversation starter!)
Traditionally, these events are two-day but for the initial meeting, we're just going to do one. Sign-ups are capped at 60, so don't delay registering!
CANCELLATION/REFUNDS
Registration can be transferred or refunded through December 30, 2025. After that, refunds will only be granted due to emergency situations and at my discretion.
IN THE EVENT OF SNOWPOCALYPSE 2026: If we're hit with a blizard (again) that prevents this event from happening as scheduled, I'll work with the venue to reschedule ASAP. If the new date conflicts, attendees will be granted an exception to the refund policy if they make the request within 7 days of the newly announced date.
