About this Event
Humans think in stories–they remember more when they hear stories.
Museums, historic sites, and memory initiatives tell stories in exhibits, programs, period rooms, and through the objects we collect. But all too often, the stories told are exclusive, not inclusive, allowing old, tired narratives to occupy the spaces for our visitors. This active workshop will provide you with the tools and techniques for understanding both the why and the how of building storytelling that develops new connections and sets the stage for building more just futures for everyone. The experiences of over 370 Sites of Conscience members in 70 countries around the world will serve as our inspiration and starting points.
Participants will:
- Understand how changes in voice, scope, centrality, and agency can build inclusion
- Analyze power and oppression in storytelling and gain ways to advocate for inclusive storytelling at your organization
- Develop a framework for inclusion and co-creation at your organization
- Using the resources of Pier 21, participate in a rapid-sprint design challenge
- Become a part of a network of colleagues committed to this work
