Inaugurating Our Humanity

inauguration (n): a ceremony to mark the formal beginning of something important, such as the start of a political appointment, wherein an augur looks to the birds for omens and signs.

As a new chapter begins in colonial “America’s” future, many of us feel pain and grief about the path ahead. On this Inauguration Day, Lydia Violet and Lyla June invite you to join us for "Inaugurating Our Humanity"—a gathering to root deep into our collective strength, and compassion, and ignite our shared humanity to bring clarity of vision in dark times.

The word inauguration traces back to the Latin inaugurare, meaning “to take omens from the flight of birds,” —reminding us that even in times of great uncertainty, we can look to nature and also inwards to our innate nature as powerful, resilient, loving beings to rise, shift perspective, and tap into unseen currents to carry us forward.

As we gather, we will honor this ancient practice by metaphorically “looking to the skies.” Like birds, we are part of something greater—a web of life that is constantly evolving and adapting.

The more-than-human world knows how to gather us. When we lend our attention there we internalize the power of nature to preserve life in the face of hardship, and even how to keep singing in the dark.

This event will be a space for reflection, connection, and collective grounding so that we may renew our strength to stand and protect life in the coming years. Through song, prayer, Joanna Macy's "Work That Reconnects," and the sharing of visions, we will reaffirm the power of kindness, justice, and love as guiding forces, no matter the political landscape.

While this is not yet a strategic planning convening, we will facilitate time to bond with others with common interests and a collection of action-oriented groups will be present to share information and resources.

We recommend but do not require a $10-$50 donation with 100% of proceeds going to The Trevor Project.
