Join us for Professor Heather Dyke's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled " The Time of our Lives"About Professor Dyke's research:
Heather is a philosopher whose main research focus is the philosophy of time. She is a prominent defender of the B-theory, or tenseless theory of time, according to which there is no objective present moment, and no flow of time. Instead, time is constituted by fixed temporal relations that order times and events. The fact that we think of time as having a present moment, and as being dynamic, says more about us and our perspective on time than it does about time itself.
Heather got her PhD from the University of Leeds in the UK in 1996, and came to Otago as a lecturer in 1998. After 15 years at Otago she returned to the UK for family reasons, and while there, spent two years at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2019 she returned to Dunedin, and to the Philosophy Programme at Otago, where she is now Head of Programme.
