About this Event
'Engineering in Modern Society'
· When? Tuesday 14 January 2025, from 5.30pm
· Where? PM06, Postgraduate Centre, Luton campus
What will the lecture be about?
Engineering has played an immense role in the history of human society since the prehistoric era. However, despite the monumental results across all historic periods, engineering for centuries has been neglected and considered as a basic activity compared to other “more noble” scientific fields.
In this talk, Professor Velisavljevic will highlight what engineering has achieved and will look at the current state of engineering in the world, across the UK, and at the University of Bedfordshire. He will attempt to provide a snapshot of the investment share engineering receives nowadays, how many active researchers it attracts, how popular it is among youngsters, and how well we recruit new engineers and engineering researchers.
Speaker bio – Professor Vladan Velisavljevic
Professor Vladan Velisavljevic is a Professor in Signal Processing and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bedfordshire. He has been a Reader and Senior Lecturer since 2011, and is also the Director of the Institute for Research in Engineering and Sustainable Environment (IRESE).
He received a BEng and MEng degree in Telecommunications from the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Serbia in 1998 and 2000, and an MSc and PhD in Signal Processing from EPFL, Switzerland in 2001 and 2005.
Prior to his current role, he worked as Senior Research Scientist at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, University of Technology Berlin, as Doctoral Assistant at EPFL, Switzerland, and as Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Belgrade, Serbia.
His research interests span signal, image, and video compression and enhancement, multiple and free viewpoint imaging and video, wavelet theory, and, more recently, machine learning for signal recognition and classification.
Professor Velisavljevic has successfully supervised a number of PhD students to completion in the area of 3D video technologies, wireless communications and machine learning. Alongside this, he has co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed research publications including two book chapters and has managed several Innovate UK projects.
