Padhraig Fleming

Padhraig was appointed as Professor of Orthodontics at Trinity College Dublin in 2022. He was formerly Professor, Consultant and Postgraduate Training Lead in Orthodontics at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (2018-2022). Padhraig is a Trinity Graduate being elected as a Foundation Scholar in 1999 and graduating with First Class Honours, Gold Medal and Sheldon Friel Medal in 2002. He obtained his MSc. with Distinction from QMUL in 2007, was awarded the British Orthodontic Society Medal for clinical excellence in 2008 and a PhD in 2013.
Padhraig’s research has been focussed on the development and evaluation of interventions to improve the predictability of appliance therapy allied to the long-term outcomes of treatment. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and received numerous research awards. He was the first individual to be awarded the Helen E. Dewel Award from the American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) on three occasions. He has also received the Turpin Award from the AAO (2021), and the Chapman Prize from the British Orthodontic Society on multiple occasions. He is Associate Editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, British Dental Journal and Journal of Dentistry.
Padhraig has co-authored four orthodontic textbooks: ‘Clinical Cases in Orthodontics’, ‘Functional Appliances: Theory and Practice’, ‘Fixed Orthodontic Appliances: A practical guide’ and in 2023 ‘Graber’s ‘Orthodontics: Current Principles and Techniques.
He is Chair of the Panel of Examiners for the Membership in Orthodontics (RCS England) and has been Scientific Chair of the British Orthodontic Conference and Chair of the University Trainers Group of the British Orthodontic Society. He has been awarded Honorary Membership of the Orthodontic Society of Ireland, Honorary Fellowships by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Edinburgh, and a Special Service Award from the British Orthodontic Society.
