About this Event
This free, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English, amplifying fresh perspectives, underheard narratives and bold ideas.
On Wednesday, February 25 at 6:00pm, we'll be discussing , by Emmelie Prophète.
In a fictional city near Port-au-Prince, Cécé witnesses the death of her grandmother. Alone in a microcosm of gang violence, she starts documenting her life on social media — meals, streets, bodies left in the open. Cécé invites us to consider how the cumulative effects of colonial brutality are circulated and consumed in the digital age, and how some lives are forced to exist in conditions where death is close and inevitable. In striking, ambivalent prose, it exposes the uneven relationship between those who live within crisis and those who spectate from afar, pressing us to consider what it really means to bear witness.
Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options.
