About this Event

Wake The Beast unleashes ‘In The Sick Of It’; a hilarious and urgent call to arms for the NHS at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.

The NHS is on its knees, yet no one has thought to call a theatre company…. until NOW.

Can actors Adam and Kemi single handedly save the UK healthcare system… before it’s too late?

Buckle up for a side-splitting, deeply moving experience unlike any other heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. We are organising two fundraising events to help us fund the run and we would love you to come and support.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to peep behind the curtain of the NHS? Well for 4 years actors Adam and Kemi have, and they are willing to share.

Join us at Wake The Beast's ‘In The Sick Of It’ where we are throwing open the doors to our hilarious and thought-provoking Emergency Department staffed entirely by the exhausted but defiant staff of the NHS and Social Care system.

Imagine:

  • Through Verbatim theatre, movement and Interactive elements, the show throws audiences into the heart of a chaotic and darkly humorous NHS emergency department.

  • Unlike anything else at the Fringe, ‘In The Sick Of It’ draws on the life stories of over 500+ NHS and Social Care staff collected since April 2020.

  • A whirlwind tour of the NHS and Social Care.

  • A playful and irreverent exploration of the unspoken toll on healthcare workers, sparking a much needed conversation.

No other theatre company has had such extensive collaboration with NHS and Social Care staff since 2020. Fresh from a performance at the Houses of Parliament ‘In The Sick Of It’ is their story, their struggles, their triumphs and their unwavering commitment to patient care.

Come and be moved in this heartbreaking and hilarious journey into the politics of health care that affects us all.

500 stories. 4 years in the making. 2 actors. 1 healthcare system. YOU.

Join the waiting list, take a seat and prepare to be…’In the Sick of It' at the Unity Theatre this summer.

‘What a powerful and vital piece of theatre. Makes me feel seen- NHS staff member

This special fundraising event of ‘In The Sick Of It’ runs at the Unity Theatre on Tuesday 30th July at 7pm.

What is it?

'In The Sick Of It' is the latest iteration of 'In Our Own Words', an innovative NHS & Social Care staff support project.

Wake The Beast have been working with clinical psychologists in three NHS Trusts and four Care Homes since 2020, to support healthcare staff exhausted by the pandemic. The project uses creative activities and verbatim theatre to propel unheard voices into the national conversation on NHS staff mental health. It has been a source of healing for staff with performances supported by psychologist-led reflective sessions, serving as a crucial tool to support staff mental health and wellbeing.

We’ve been championing the voices of those who tirelessly care for us within the NHS, but now we want to go further and give them a platform on the national stage.

Sharing true stories with the public.

NHS staff tell us it's time their voices and stories and voices were heard by a wider audience and the Edinburgh Festival provides a world class platform to do this. These stories born from the darkest of times, hold immense value in advocating for the mental health and wellbeing of our healthcare staff.
