In The Ring With Dan Donnelly and Dublin’s Boxing Legends
National Stadium – Sat 9 May – 8pm
As part of Culture Date With Dublin 8 2026, the iconic National Stadium becomes the stage for a powerful in-ring cultural gathering exploring the life, legend and legacy of Ireland’s first heavyweight champion, Dan Donnelly.
Donnelly wasn’t just famous for winning fights. In the years after the 1798 rebellion, his victories over English opponents were taken up as something bigger — symbols of defiance and pride. His bouts attracted huge crowds, ballads were written about him, and his reputation travelled well beyond the ring. Even after his death, the story kept evolving, most famously through the strange saga of Donnelly’s Arm, which circulated for decades as a kind of relic of strength and spectacle (an artefact we hope to have on display during the festival).
There’s also a strong Dublin 8 connection. Donnelly later became proprietor of Fallon’s pub, rooting him in the social life of the area, and he’s buried in Bully’s Acre in Kilmainham, alongside other figures who loom large in the city’s memory. That journey - from prizefighter to publican to legend - feels closely tied to how stories settle and are passed on in this part of Dublin.
Within this year’s Culture Date with Dublin 8 theme, Songlines of the City, and alongside the wider Gulliver 300 moment, we’re interested in scale and legacy — how certain figures grow beyond themselves, and how their stories continue to echo across time, shaping how we understand the city today.
The Saturday night event is an in-ring cultural gathering hosted by Donal Fallon, mixing conversation with live performance, music, spoken word and theatrical responses to Donnelly’s life and afterlife. It’s not a straight retelling of his story, but an exploration of how his legend was made and remade - from prizefights to pubs, from ballads to contemporary performance. Contributors include Barry McGovern, Terry O’Neill (whose Rope A Dope playfully engages with boxing folklore), Niamh Ní Charra, who recorded Donnelly’s Arm, spoken word artist Emmet O’Brien, and very special guest Damien Dempsey, with further contributors to be announced.
