The proliferation of generative AI is causing profound changes in the online information ecosystem and in the economics of media. Hundreds of millions of people are intentionally using generative AI, while billions more are being exposed to its outputs through online services. Further, generative AI built into search engines is diverting viewers and revenue from journalistic websites, even as they depend on these sources for current information.

This event will feature UPenn's Professors Chris Callison-Burch and Danaé Metaxa as well as Dr. Courtney Radisch to speak to the impact of generative AI on journalists and media institutions. An additional guest speaker will join the event.

The Penn Center on Media, Technology, and Democracy works to better understand the information ecosystem through cutting-edge science, and leverages that research to strengthen the foundations of democracy.
