In-Person Lecture: Dana Rubin on History of Women's Oratory in Print
Come join us at The Grolier Club for an enlightening lecture by Dana Rubin, author of a new anthology, Speaking While Female: 75 Extraordinary Speeches by American Women (RealClear Publishing). Dana will share what she’s learned over the past five years excavating and publishing historic speeches by women. Through the centuries, speech anthologies have almost completely ignored women’s spoken words, and as a consequence what women had to say in public has largely been forgotten.
But an intrepid sleuth can uncover historically significant examples of women’s oratory in newspaper archives, out-of-print books, journals, pamphlets and broadsides. Dana will give us a glimpse into this rich vein of little-known book and manuscript history.
As a companion resource to Speaking While Female, Dana created the Speaking While Female Speech Bank (SpeakingWhileFemale.co), a free online archive with thousands of speeches by women from across time and around the world.
