Wisconsin Registry credit available!
Infants and toddlers learn through imitation. They learn by observing and connecting with caregivers throughout daily routines like play, mealtime, and reading time.
As infants learn new skills through exploration of their environment with their caregivers, they begin to understand that actions, gestures, and sounds carry meaning.
How do we support this process?
By meeting each child where they are and helping them learn the next steps.
In this workshop, we will discuss sensorimotor learning and imitation as a process supporting communication development. Stephanie will describe how infants and toddlers learn the building blocks of communication through imitation, specifically highlighting how her board book series, The My First-Learn-to-Talk Books, supports this learning in each stage. With a deeper understanding of this information, parents and professionals will more easily be able to identify a starting point for supporting each child’s learning.
In the second half of this session, Stephanie will share specific practical strategies that can be used to support the development of both non-verbal and verbal communication skills. She will also describe signs that may indicate the need for a referral to a speech-language pathologist for further evaluation.
Following this presentation, there will be activities available in the main library, totaling about an additional half-hour of content. (approx. 10:30-11:00 AM)

This program is part of GROWING KPL KIDS: TERRIFIC TALKERS!
Join us for an exciting program series offering dynamic opportunities for babies, toddlers, and caregivers to learn, inspired by the Learn-to-Talk book series by speech pathologist, Stephanie Cohen. These programs encourage the building blocks of speech, emotional connection, and early learning from infancy by equipping caregivers with the tools to help new speakers grow. Participants will receive a copy of Stephanie Cohen’s board book, My First Learn-to-talk Book, while supplies last.
