Bring your dull knives, tired cutting boards and imperfect cast iron pans to Milk Street for a tool care clinic that will give them new life
About this Event

NOTE: iphone and ipad users,to register for class.

Razor-sharp knives that glide easily through glossy tomatoes. Cast iron pans so well seasoned that you can fry eggs in them with no clean-up afterwards. Beloved wooden utensils that are smooth to the touch. This is how we all imagine our kitchens, but in the reality of busy, day-to-day cooking, it’s easy to allow the tools you’re using to start looking a little worse for wear. That’s why we’ve created a new in-person, hands-on event format at Milk Street: a kitchen tool clinic. Bring your dull knives, your bedraggled wooden utensils, your bleak cutting boards, your less-than-stellar cast iron pans, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know to give them a little culinary CPR. You’ll learn how to sharpen knives like a pro, whether you want to invest in whetstone skills or are more interested in error-proof electric sharpening. We’ll have sandpaper of various grits and mineral and board oils of different styles, plus the know-how to help you understand which combination to use for your wooden spoons and cutting boards. And we’ll show you why salt is something we swear by for seasoning cast iron pans, which oils seal the deal the best, and how to understand when you can get away with a quick season vs. when you need a bigger refresh.
Because you will have worked up an appetite with all this tool care, this class does conclude with a family-style dinner that you’ll help prepare using your freshly sharpened knives. To complement your fresh, crunchy Thai-style cabbage salad with Nước chấm, our team will make a batch of Thai charred chicken with cashews, plus a sweet treat to enjoy as we wrap up.
Each attendee is welcome to bring up to two cutting boards, three knives, four utensils and two cast iron items with them to this class. Please don’t bring any cast iron pans that are completely overtaken by rust; though we’ll happily provide suggestions on how to deal with serious cases, we won’t have time to tackle damage that intense during this class. If you bring the maximum number of items, we don’t guarantee that you’ll get through all of them - though we do guarantee that you will have the skills to take care of them at home!
