Op 3 maart vindt een Engels ondertitelde vertoning van Damnation plaats die wordt ingeleid door David Deprez, voormalig artistiek directeur van Lumière en groot bewonderaar van Béla Tarr.

The Turin Horse - Engels ondertiteld
In 1889 is de filosoof Friedrich Nietzsche op weg naar Turijn getuige van de afranseling van een paard. Huilend slaat hij zijn armen om het dier. In de jaren daarna leefde Nietzsche in afzondering en viel hij ten prooi aan krankzinnigheid. Maar wat gebeurde met het paard?

Als een circus neerstrijkt in een klein Hongaars stadje, raakt de bevolking in de ban van een geheimzinnige ‘prins’ die het stadje meesleurt in een collectieve vernietigingsroes.
Damnation - Nederlands ondertiteld
Karrer leeft sinds zijn ontslag een teruggetrokken bestaan in een grauw industriestadje op het Hongaarse platteland. Zijn avonden brengt hij door in de Titanic Bar: daar staart hij verliefd naar de zangeres. Zonder resultaat, de vrouw is al getrouwd.

Béla Tarr, who passed away on 6 January, was one of the most influential film auteurs of recent decades. In his oeuvre, Tarr aimed to show, in his own words, ‘the unbearable heaviness of human existence’. As a tribute to the Hungarian master of slow cinema, Lumière is revisiting some of the highlights of his oeuvre.
Special screening of Damnation
On 3 March, there will be a special screening of Damnation, introduced by David Deprez, former Artistic Director of Lumière and a great admirer of Béla Tarr.
