Dit najaar verschijnt bij uitgeverij HetMoet 'Heksentsteen' van Sinéad Gleeson, vertaald door Astrid Huisman. Kom op donderdagavond 4 december langs in boekhandel De Vries Van Stockum in Den Haag voor een voordracht, gesprek en signeersessie, gemodereerd door HetMoet oprichter Elte Rauch.
Sinéad Gleeson is een Ierse schrijver wiens essaycollectie Hemellichamen (Constellations) non-fictieboek van het jaar werd bij de Irish Book Awards en op de shortlist stond van onder andere de Rathbones Folio Prize. Ze is tevens redacteur van de bundels The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers en The Art of The Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories. In 2022 stelde ze samen met Kim Gordon This Woman’s Work: Essays on Music samen. Sinéad werkt ook met verschillende kunstenaars en musici aan performancekunststukken en geluidsinstallaties. Heksensteen is haar debuutroman en stond op de longlist van de 2025 Dublin Literary Award.
Astrid Huisman is een veelzijdige en bevlogen vertaler van Engelstalige poëzie en literatuur. Ze heeft werk vertaald van onder meer Deborah Levy, Jesmyn Ward en Patti Smith en daarnaast begeleidt ze met veel enthousiasme beginnende vertalers. Begin 2025 heeft Astrid als Translator-in-Residence van de Universiteit van Galway aan de vertaling van Heksensteen gewerkt. Voor uitgeverij HetMoet vertaalde zij eerder Lome dagen, vluchtig gezelschap van Eve Babitz en Hemellichamen van Sinéad Gleeson.
'Heksensteen' synopsis: Kunstenaar Nell woont op een onherbergzaam, geïsoleerd eiland met een vuurtoren, een minimarkt en een pub. Het eiland is haar thuis en vormt de inspiratie voor haar kunst, maar wordt ook geplaagd door een onverklaarbaar, haast bovennatuurlijk geluid dat uit het binnenste van de heuvels lijkt te komen. De mysterieuze Iníons, een gemeenschap van vrouwen die van over de hele wereld hun toevlucht op een afgelegen klif van het eiland hebben gezocht, noemen het geluid een Roeping.
Op een dag ontvangt Nell een brief van de Iníons, met de uitnodiging om ter ere van hun lange geschiedenis een kunstwerk voor hen te creëren. Tijdens het maken ontdekt Nell bepaalde dingen over de commune, en over zichzelf, waardoor alles wat ze dacht te weten op losse schroeven komt te staan.

This autumn, HetMoet publishers will release Sinéad Gleeson's 'Heksentsteen' (Hagstone), translated into Dutch by Astrid Huisman. Join us at De Vries Van Stockum bookshop in The Hague on Thursday evening, 4 December, for a reading, discussion and book signing, moderated by HetMoet founder Elte Rauch.
Sinéad Gleeson's essay collection Constellations: Reflections from Life was published by Picador in 2019 and won Non-Fiction Book of the Year at 2019 Irish Book Awards and the Dalkey Literary Award for Emerging Writer. It was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and Michel Deon Prize. She is the editor of The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers (named for a line from Maeve Brennan, which includes a story by Brennan), The Glass Shore: Short Stories by Women Writers from the North of Ireland and The Art of Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories. Sinéad also collaborates with artists and musicians, with commissions from The Wellcome Collection, BBC, Frieze and various galleries. In 2022, with Kim Gordon, she co-edited This Woman’s Work: Essays on Music, published by White Rabbit Books. Hagstone is her debut novel and was longlisted for the 2025 Dublin Literary Award.
Astrid Huisman is a versatile and passionate translator of English-language poetry and literature. She has translated works by Deborah Levy, Jesmyn Ward, Patti Smith and others, and also enthusiastically mentors novice translators. In early 2025, Astrid worked on the translation of Hagstone as Translator-in-Residence at the University of Galway. She previously translated works of Eve Babitz and Sinéad Gleeson for HetMoet publishers.
'Hagstone' synopsis: On a wild and rugged island cut off and isolated to some, artist Nell feels the island is her home. It is the source of inspiration for her art, rooted in landscape, folklore and the feminine. The mysterious Iníons, a commune of women who have travelled there from all over the world, consider it a place of refuge and safety, of solace in nature.
All the islanders live alongside the strange murmurings that seem to emanate from within the depths of the island, a sound that is almost supernatural – a Summoning as the Iníons call it. One day, a letter arrives at Nell’s door from the reclusive Iníons who invite Nell into the commune for a commission to produce a magnificent art piece to celebrate their long history. In its creation, Nell will discover things about the community and about herself that will challenge everything she thought she knew.
Beautifully written and gripping, Sinéad Gleeson’s debut novel takes in the darker side of human nature and the mysteries of faith and the natural world.
