About this Event

Join Lilia Hassaine in conversation (in French) with Sabrina Bouarour for a discussion of her latest novel Soleil Amer, shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt 2021 and the Prix Interallié 2021. This novel traces the life story of an Algerian family in the 1950s as they settle as working-class immigrants in the Paris region. With particular attention to a close-knit cast of flamboyant female characters, Lilia Hassaine offers a vibrant depiction of a pivotal period in French history. With Sabrina Bouarour, lecturer in French studies at ULIP, she will share her thoughts on what it means to revisit this neglected history now, and why the novel form is her chosen medium.

Lilia Hassaine is a French novelist, journalist and panelist for the television programme, Quotidien. Her first novel L'Oeil du Paon (Editions Gallimard) was published in 2019.

Novel Synopsis

Soleil Amer, Gallimard, 2021
