About this Event

In collaboration with Oxford House, Kayd Somali Arts and Culture invites you to an energising afternoon with Awo Abdi and Asma Elmi—two dynamic forces in the UK’s art scene. This in-conversation event offers a unique opportunity to explore what inspires both Awo and Asma, from bold exhibitions to the everyday moments that spark their creativity. Awo Abdi will share her journey as an artist, the stories behind her favourite works, and her experience working on exciting commissions—including her ongoing partnership with Oxford House. Expect a warm, engaging atmosphere full of insight into how art connects communities and reflects the rhythms of daily life. Asma Elmi will speak about her work in Wales, focusing on bridging cultures, uncovering untold stories, and advocating for greater representation in the creative industries. She’ll reflect on her recent collaboration with Al Naaem and Hayaat Women Trust, an organisation empowering young Welsh Somali women through the arts. Together, they created Rooted in Our Dhaqan—a visual and storytelling project that celebrates Somali heritage in all its richness and complexity.

At the end of the event, guests will have the opportunity to view and purchase original works by Awo Abdi and explore the work of Asma Elmi.

Awo Abdi is a multidisciplinary artist blending architecture, digital art, and cultural storytelling. Her debut solo exhibition, "Fortune Through Lineage" (Manchester, 2025), explores Somali identity and familial legacy. Through her Digital Postcard Series, Awo reimagines Somali cities as collectible art and fashion. She also works as a UX designer, creating human-centred, immersive experiences. Asma Elmi, a fashion promotion graduate from the University of South Wales, is the founder of Al Naaem, a platform amplifying first-generation global majority creatives in Wales and beyond. In collaboration with Hayaat Women Trust, she co-created "Rooted in Our Dhaqan", a visual storytelling project celebrating Somali heritage, faith, and resilience across generations.

Event Host: Tusma Awil, a 26 year old Somali woman born and raised in London, is carving out a space that bridges her career in the finance world and love for the creative arts. As a graduate of Politics and International Relations, she’s always been fascinated by global dynamics, which has since evolved to focus on diasporic Somali art in the Western world.
