AUDIENCE
Occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, BCBAs, psychologists, and mental health therapists. In order to attend, providers must be licensed at, or training at, a master’s or doctoral level.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is Project ImPACT (cite) provider training. Project ImPACT is an evidence-based parent-mediated intervention for young children with autism and other social communication challenges. It is a naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention (NDBI, cite). ImPACT training uses a combination of asynchronous and synchronous activities to prepare providers to teach and coach Project ImPACT strategies to caregivers.
The training has two parts which are included in the registration fee:
- Pre-requisite Beginner e-course
- In-person Advanced Course
(1) Beginner e-Course (Pre-Requisite), which must be completed prior to attending Advanced Training. The Beginner e-Course is a 6-hour, self-paced, online tutorial. The course introduces the Project ImPACT program and the intervention strategies. It uses a mix of didactic elements, video examples, and exercises to teach key concepts. The instructor will send registered participants information about the Beginning e-course on Wednesday,, October 9th.
2) Advanced Course that will take place in Coralville, November 7 and 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, with an hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks each day. The Advanced Course is a 14-hour, two-day workshop that follows the Beginner e-Course. It prepares providers to use the Project ImPACT curriculum with families. It uses a combination of lecture, video review, role play, and small group discussion to help providers apply the concepts learned in the Beginner e-Course.

AT THE COMPLETION OF THIS TRAINING, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
Participants will be able to accurately describe the Project ImPACT program and the intervention strategies employed in this intervention.
Participants will be ready to offer the Project ImPACT curriculum as a direct intervention with children.
Participants will be prepared to offer the Project ImPACT curriculum as a parent-meditated intervention with families.
PRESENTER
Kelly Pelzel, PhD, is a licensed psychologist who provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment services at ChildServe’s Iowa City location. She is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Pelzel received her BA from U.N.I. and her PhD from the University of Utah. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and completed a LEND post-doctoral fellowship at the UI Healthcare’s Center for Disabilities and Development. Dr. Pelzel has 25 years of experience evaluating and treating children with autism. She became a certified Project ImPACT coach in 2014 and a certified Project ImPACT training consultant in 2022. Dr. Pelzel additionally serves on the Regional Autism Assistance Program’s expert panel and is a board member for the Autism Society of Iowa.
