About this Event
As part of their North America tour to celebrate the 2024 Taiwanese American Heritage Week, the Ten-Drum Art Percussion Group from Taiwan will give a one-of-a-kind percussion music performance to bring you an impression of Taiwan through their unique music performance at the Fridley Hihi School Auditorium on June 7, Friday, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

About the group 有關:
The ‘Ten-Drum Art Percussion Group’ was established in the spring of 2000. ‘Creating and passing on Taiwanese native culture and promoting the art of drumming’ is the group’s greatest development goal. The character ‘十’ (ten) represents the crossing of drumsticks, gathering energy from all directions, and uniting the strength of unity.
Over the years, the group’s creative musical works have been deeply loved by audiences. Using local themes, landscapes, and diverse ethnic percussion elements, they have enriched the traditional face of percussion music, astonishing the public with how diverse and exciting ‘drums’ can be! In addition, the Ten Drum Art Percussion Group also upholds the goals of creating and popularizing native percussion music, spreading the art of drumming to everyone, implementing human-centered education, opening up multicultural wisdom, promoting special education enlightenment, embracing world cultures, and promoting the art of drumming.
「十鼓藝術打擊樂團」成立於2000年春，「創作與傳承台灣本土文化，弘揚鼓樂藝術」是團體最大的發展目標。 「十」字代表鼓槌交叉，匯聚八方能量，凝聚團結力量。
多年來，樂團創作的音樂作品深受觀眾喜愛。 他們利用當地的題材、風景以及多元的民族打擊樂元素，豐富了打擊樂的傳統面貌，讓大眾驚嘆「鼓」的多樣性和精彩！ 此外，十鼓藝術打擊樂團也秉持創作及普及本土打擊樂、向全民傳播鼓樂藝術、落實以人為本的教育、開啟多元文化智慧、推動特殊教育啟蒙、擁抱世界文化、弘揚鼓樂藝術。
Program Introduction 節目簡介:
“Taiwan Impressions” showcases the landscapes of Taiwan’s residents and indigenous people in the mountains and rivers. The belief that “learning from people, learning from all things, and learning from heaven and earth” is essential for everyone’s growth. “Living in harmony with nature” is also a core belief of the Ten-Drum Art Percussion Group.
“臺灣印記”展現臺灣常住民及原民鄉野人文山川的景色，「以人為師、以萬物為師、以天地為
師」是任何人成⾧過程中必學習的三個人生導師，「與自然和平共生」更是十鼓核心的信念。
General Order 點將令:
This composition is inspired by the traditional Taiwanese folk belief of the “Eight Generals” (八家將巡差). In folklore, these eight generals are represented by their names (甘, 柳, 范, 謝, 何, 張, 徐, 曹). Sometimes, three additional minor officials (差役, 文差, 武差) are included, making a total of ten figures. The four generals (甘, 柳, 范, 謝) are collectively known as the “Four Generals,” while the other four (何, 張, 徐, 曹) are associated with the “Four Gods” representing the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). The “Seven Lord” and “Eight Lord” refer to the generals 謝 and 范, respectively.
In this creative composition, the imagery of these folk characters is combined with percussion music to achieve a protective and exorcising effect. The musical style occasionally reveals an unknown blend of yin and yang energies, with moments of solemnity and intensity. The composition is divided into seven main sections:
- Commanding the Generals
- Receiving Orders
- Passing Orders
- Apprehending
- Interrogation
- Recording Confessions
- Escorting Away
這首作品是以臺灣民間八家將巡差為意象所創作之曲目，民俗信仰中之八家將為（甘、柳、范、謝、何、張、徐、曹）八位，有時會增加（差役、文差、武差）三位小差，共十㇐位。甘、柳、范、謝四將軍稱四將與何、 張、徐、曹稱（四神即春、夏、秋、冬）並稱為八將，而七爺、八爺即為謝、范 兩將軍。今以此意象為創意，搭以鼓樂逹到鎮煞驅邪之効果，曲風中不時流露出㇐ 股無名的陰神正氣與肅殺之氣，曲段分為七大段（㇐）將令（二）接令 （三）傳令（四）捉拿（五）刑拷（六）錄供（七）押解。
Eighteen Arhat Drums:
The “Eighteen Arhats” concept originates from Buddhist beliefs, where they are revered as protectors of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha. The author was inspired by the unique cultural practices of the Songjiang Zhen and the Eighteen Arhat Mountain in Neimen Township, Kaohsiung County, Taiwan. They integrated drumming techniques with the Eighteen Arhat martial arts movements into one form.
The composition of the Eighteen Arhat Drums is initially divided into four main parts:
- Legs
- Body and Waist
- Hands
- Eyes
These four parts correspond to the eighteen distinct movements, synchronized with the rhythmic patterns of drumming, resulting in both four-part and two-part cycles. The entire composition of the Eighteen Arhat Drums is further divided into six sections, each containing three movement phrases.
By recognizing the ancient, pure, and emotionally stirring sound, this piece serves as the inaugural movement in the field of drumming practice.
十八羅漢鼓
十八羅漢乃是〝釋迦牟尼佛〞的護法尊者，作者有感於在臺灣高雄縣旗山 鎮內門鄉 的宋江陣及十八羅漢山之特有文化，將鼓術與十八羅漢拳法融為 ㇐體，進而以鼓術運動，來提昇國力，引領全民進入 鼓藝殿堂。 十八羅漢鼓初分為四大部份。（㇐）腿 （二）身、腰（三）手部（四）眼 四部搭配十八項動作，而配合擊鼓之節奏運動做出四部輪奏及二部輪奏。 全首十八羅漢鼓又分六段，每段有三個運動句子。
此為鼓術運動之首部曲。其主要希望透過口語的記憶方式以運動的概念來 推行全民鼓術，豐富國民生活，認同此㇐來自於古老單純又憾動人心的樂 音，讓鼓術運動成為我們生活的㇐部份。
White Deer Running, Sun Moon Lake Shinning 逐鹿躍動映明潭:
The composition is based on the ancestral legend of the indigenous Thao. It describes an ancestor chasing a white deer from Ali Mountain. After going over several mountains, he found Arcadia (Sun Moon Lake) and settled in this earthly paradise surrounded by water and sand. The entire piece is structured into seven parts: (1) Introduction, (2) Galloping, (3) Unity, (4) Rhythmic Beats, (5) Deer Chase, (6) Lake Manifestation, and (7) Closing (Settling Down). Finally, the tolling of three bells merges the past and present into one concatenated time tunnel.
此曲是依明潭邵族的祖先傳說~譜曲而成。寫意邵族祖先曾自阿里山追逐著㇐隻白鹿，越過群山後發現這處桃花源(日月潭)，因而定居於這人間水沙連仙境之中。全曲依(㇐)序~(二)奔馳~(三)同心~(四)杵音~(五)逐鹿~(六)潭現~(七)尾聲 (安居)構成，最後在三口鐘聲下將過去與現在的時光隧道融合ㄧ體。
Hand Drums Ensemble – Clap Song 手鼓聯奏~拍手歌:
This composition is an adapted creation. The original melody draws inspiration from the Tsou tribe, an indigenous group in Taiwan, specifically from their hand-clapping songs. The essence of the piece encourages clapping hands, swaying the body, and taking powerful steps while we are still young. In this extended and developed version, the composer incorporates ensemble drumming as the main musical section. Beyond the melodious singing and dancing, the composition infuses the passionate and energetic elements of indigenous vitality. Throughout the performance, you can hear robust rhythms and vocals, fully showcasing the primal life force of the Tsou tribe.
此曲為改編創作，原曲以臺灣原住民族〝鄒族〞的拍手歌為前奏引述，曲意 為拍拍手，搖搖身軀，邁出有力的步伐，趁我們還年輕的時候。 今作曲者將此曲延伸發展，並以手鼓聯奏的方式作為全曲的主樂段落，將 原住民奔放之美的力量除悠揚的歌聲、舞蹈外，更融入了熱情活力的鼓樂 元素，演奏中不時可聽到強而有力的節奏與歌聲，充份展現出鄒族的原始 生命力。
Grand Opening Tune 大開聲:
“Grand Opening Tune” is a cross-genre composition jointly performed by the Daban’ni Ensemble and the Ten Drum Percussion Group in 2024. The piece begins with the classic Ten Drum work “Riding the Wind, Breaking the Waves,” followed by a fusion of traditional and popular musical instruments from the Daban’ni Ensemble, drawing inspiration from Hakka folk songs and rich Hakka culture. The lively sounds of the suona and bamboo flute blend with guitar, piano, and electric bass, while the jazz drums collaborate with the Ten Drum percussion ensemble to create a dynamic and powerful cross-genre rhythm. The result is an exhilarating and visually captivating feast for the senses.
大開聲是打幫你樂團與十鼓打擊樂團於 2024 年合作首演的跨界作品。 樂曲以十鼓經典作品《乘風破浪》開聲，接著搭配打幫你樂團傳統與流行樂 器交織演奏以客家歌謠為素材創作、充滿濃濃客家文化的曲調，嗩吶、竹笛的朝氣演奏、融入吉他、鋼琴、電貝斯，爵士鼓則和十鼓擊樂團合力創造 豐富而充滿張力與力量的跨界節奏。交織出震撼又暢快的聽覺、視覺饗宴。
Sky Slash 天空斬:
The composition “Sky Slash” is based on the scenario from the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” where Guan Yu passes through five gates and defeats six generals. The entire piece is divided into six sections:
- Introduction
- Dongling Gate (defeating Kong Xiu)
- Luoyang Gate (defeating Han Fu and Meng Tan)
- Sishui Gate (defeating Bian Xi at Zhen Guo Temple)
- Xingyang Gate (defeating Wang Zhi)
- Yellow River Gate (defeating Qin Qi)
The composition combines percussion, wind instruments, and theatrical elements to vividly depict the extraordinary courage and wisdom of the martial saint Guan Yu as he protects his sister-in-law. It is named “Sky Slash” in honor of this heroic figure from ancient times.
天空斬㇐曲是依三國演義之關公過五關斬六將情境譜曲。全曲分為：(㇐)序、(二)東嶺關(斬孔秀)、(三)洛陽關(斬韓福、孟坦)、(四)汜 水關(斬鎮國寺卞喜)、(五)滎陽關(斬王植)、(六)黃河關(斬秦琪)，共六段譜 曲。以鼓樂、吹打樂及劇場身段將武聖關雲⾧護嫂行義之氣宇非凡及智勇雙全描繪傳神。希望以青龍偃月刀之天空斬命名紀念㇐代英豪。
Boastful Rooster 吹牛雞:
This composition draws inspiration from the incessant crowing of rural roosters. It vividly portrays the competitive nature of a rooster that insists on being the first wake-up call in the village, crowing from early morning until noon without pause. This persistent noise can be quite bothersome. Hence, the piece is aptly named “Boastful Rooster,” capturing its unyielding spirit and attention-seeking behavior within the village. The composition further enriches its ambiance by incorporating elements from the Tujia ethnic group’s traditional “Daliuzi” playing technique.
此曲是以鄉間公雞啼鳴不已為素材。形容好勝的公雞於日正當中仍搶當村裡的第㇐位起床號，自清晨啼鳴至正午仍不罷休，讓人覺聒噪不已，故取吹牛 雞為名，詮釋出牠在村裡㇐副不可㇐世及愛現的模樣，並加以土家族打 溜子的演奏手法而豐富了此曲的意境。
Thunder Reborn 雷霆再現:
The composition “Thunder Reborn” is the second work named after the original “Clash of Thunder.” It showcases even more musical dynamism and vitality than the first installment. The Thunder series was created for the Taiwan International Percussion Festival, combining fireworks and percussion in an audiovisual masterpiece. The performance’s sound and light will once again challenge your sensory nerves and test your heart rate. The intricate and layered composition will introduce you to the unpredictable variations and surreal impact of percussion art for the second time.
此曲是繼雷霆交鋒後再度以雷霆為名的第二部作品，展現出的音樂動感及活力更甚於雷霆交鋒首部曲。 雷霆系列是因應臺灣國際鼓樂節而創作的㇐系列煙火與鼓樂的影音鉅作。其演出中的聲光將再度挑戰您的感官神經，並測驗您的心跳脈搏指數。 層遞對位的曲式將讓您二度領教到鼓樂藝術的變化莫測與超現實的震撼體驗。
The Mountain's Summoning 山之喚:
The composition “The Mountain's Summoning” draws inspiration from the majestic and imposing sacred tree clusters that stand tall in Alishan. The composer weaves together the essence, spirit, and grandeur of nature into this piece. Despite facing natural disasters and human logging, the sacred tree clusters remain steadfast, unyielding to any challenges.
In this composition, the powerful and expansive aura of the towering tree clusters is interpreted through a combination of ensemble drums, including standing and side drums. The rhythmic beats resonate throughout the entire piece, featuring standing drums, side drums, three-tone drums, and small tympani. The thunderous force of the ensemble drums reverberates, vividly showcasing the life force of Alishan’s sacred trees.
山之喚
作曲者有感於阿里山中巍巍矗立的神木群氣勢，將其精氣、神與大自然融為㇐體的精神譜成此曲。雖然神木群經歷了天災及人為砍伐，可是每次的考 驗它仍然屹立不搖，無懼於任何的焠鍊。
今借由群鼓側立及挺立的天鼓來詮釋巨木群高聳入雲壯闊的氣勢，以力拔山河的鼓樂貫串全曲，依立鼓、側鼓、三音鼓、小堂鼓四部輪奏，以雷霆萬鈞的群鼓氣勢震懾全場，充份展現出阿里山神木群的生命力。
Clash of Thunder 雷霆交鋒
The composition “Clash of Thunder” is characterized by its primal and dynamic rhythm. It is structured throughout with an 8/8 beat and a 6/8 beat. For the first time, the composer infuses the imagery of percussion into the piece, alternating between unified ensemble sections and individual solos, all while emphasizing exaggerated tension through physical movements. This unique blend of primal and contemporary elements creates an electrifying audiovisual experience that captivates the audience.
雷霆交鋒
全曲充滿原始與動感的節奏，以 8/8 拍及 6/8 貫串全曲，作曲者首次將擊樂的意象，以雷霆交鋒氣勢時而齊奏，時而分部、時而獨奏，加上肢體展現出 誇大的張力，使樂曲風格呈現㇐種原始又現代的獨有特色，聆賞者將感受到 活力四射的影音魅力與震撼。
