Offering an exploration of mis-en-scène and learning by doing
About this Event

Building on the success of its first filmmaking workshop in October and its monthly Film Club, Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) is offering a second beginning-level filmmaking workshop at Imago Gallery, 36 Market Street, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 28.

Participants will join Imago filmmaker Katherine Reaves in an exploration of mis-en-scène--set-design, costuming and make-up-- as the group explores the theme of “interiors.” Designed for those 18 years of age and above, Imago’s film workshops introduce the aspiring filmmaker to the basics of film language through practice and doing.

Workshops require a smartphone or camera capable of taking video, plus enthusiasm and curiosity. Participants should know how to take a selfie and work their phone or camera. The goal is to enable you to take this experience with you to your own projects and provide a starting point to learn more. Although designed for beginners, experienced filmmakers are also welcome.

The session is limited to 10 people. Fee for the workshop is $25. Register on Eventbrite at: https://Feb26filmworkshopatimago.eventbrite.com.

Participants will be assigned a local space in downtown Warren; each space having been prearranged. Participants will respond to the interior with a “5x5,” which is five different shots, five seconds each. Participants will edit and view the final products in class. This exercise builds on the previous workshop, where participants were introduced to the basic shots and angles, but it is open to all and participation in the previous workshop or Film Club is not a perquisite.

Reaves is an award-winning digital filmmaker and video artist living in Rhode Island. She earned bachelor’s degrees in the history of art from the University of Michigan and studio art from Rhode Island College. She has a master’s degree in art education from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Trained as a painter, she switched to digital filmmaking when pregnant with her daughter and, over 20 years, has built a body of work encompassing short and feature length documentaries telling the stories of local artists, personages, and non-profit organizations.
