Tiny pests, big problems. This presentation focuses on the scientific and technical use of image stacking technology, with an emphasis on the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Entomology Lab Imaging Unit. We will (briefly) explain what image stacking is, why it is useful, how it is done at ODA, and the process, equipment, and software we use to capture and create our stacked images. Particular attention will be paid to capturing high-resolution images of often tiny pests or of tiny details of a pest specimen's physical anatomy. The importance and usefulness of these detailed images will be covered, with examples of the kinds of images we create and how they are used for pest identification. Also covered will be the final finished products (posters, images for scientific journal publications, booklets, and education/outreach materials) and how these are available and accessible to the public.
About the Presenter: Joshua Buck Dunlap is the imaging specialist at the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Insect Pest Prevention and Management (IPPM) program. He has worked for the ODA since 2017 and holds a Master's Degree in Entomology from Wichita State University. He lives with two poorly mannered parrots and enjoys hiking, goldschlager, and listening to Toni Braxton.
