Giles Duley is a British photographer, writer, and humanitarian storyteller whose work focuses on the long-term human impact of conflict. He began his career in the 1990s as a highly successful music and fashion photographer, contributing to leading international publications such as Vogue, GQ, and Esquire. During this time, he photographed prominent artists including Oasis, The Prodigy, and Mariah Carey, establishing himself within the international commercial photography scene.

In the early 2000s, he made a decisive shift away from commercial photography to pursue a more socially engaged practice. Turning his lens toward underreported global issues, Duley began documenting the lives of civilians affected by war, displacement, and poverty, working in regions including the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

In 2011, while on foot patrol with the US 75th Cavalry Regiment in Afghanistan, Duley stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained catastrophic injuries, losing both legs and his left arm. His life was saved by the rapid response of the patrol medic and the medevac team.

He was evacuated to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where he spent 45 days in intensive care and came close to dying on several occasions. After multiple surgeries, he began a long and demanding rehabilitation process at DMRC Headley Court.

What followed became a defining part of his story: less than a year after the incident, Duley returned to Afghanistan, determined to continue his work. His experience profoundly reshaped his perspective, deepening his commitment to telling stories that are not about conflict itself, but about humanity, dignity, and resilience in its aftermath.

Duley’s photographic practice focuses particularly on the lives of those often overlooked—civilians living with the consequences of war, including people with disabilities in post-conflict settings. His work moves beyond the moment of crisis, addressing the long-term social, physical, and psychological impact of violence.

Alongside his photographic work, he is the founder and CEO of the Legacy of War Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting communities affected by conflict and advocating for sustainable, long-term recovery.

His storytelling extends across multiple platforms, including books, exhibitions, and broadcast media. He has also collaborated with musicians and artists, and created projects such as The One Armed Chef, which combines food, storytelling, and encounters with communities around the world.

In 2022, he was appointed the first United Nations Global Advocate for Persons with Disabilities in Conflict and Peacebuilding Settings. In this role, he works to raise awareness, influence policy, and amplify the voices of people with disabilities affected by war and instability.

Through his work, Duley consistently challenges how conflict is represented, shifting the focus from violence to the enduring strength and dignity of those who live through it.
