About this Event
WHO
Teachers implementing IM 6–12 Math who are familiar with the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions framework and are comfortable with the problem-based lesson structure.
WHEN
While implementing IM 6–12 Math, following Focus on Mathematical Discourse 2
DESCRIPTION
How can looking at student work support teacher planning for orchestrating mathematics discussions? The purpose of this session is to gain a deeper understanding of the 5 Practices framework (Anticipate, Monitor, Select, Sequence, Connect), especially selecting and sequencing student work from an activity in order to make important mathematical connections during a class discussion. This session builds on Focus on Mathematical Discourse 2, where the framework was introduced and examined through a case study. Teachers will engage in planning an activity using the framework along with the guidance provided in the IM lesson plan. They will develop a plan for monitoring as students work, and look at actual student work to make instructional decisions. Teachers will also discuss classroom scenarios that could arise and impact instruction when the goal is to engage students in a mathematical discussion using the work they produced.
LEARNING GOALS
- Analyze the connections between a 5 Practices activity as enacted and the supports in the teacher materials.
- Articulate the purposes of Anticipate, Monitor, Select, Sequence, and Connect in planning and enacting an activity.
- Apply the 5 Practices to a given set of student work.
- Analyze different ways of applying the 5 Practices to a set of student work for an activity.
- Plan how to address common classroom scenarios involving the 5 Practices framework.
- **Due to the interactive nature of this virtual session and copyrights on the materials recordings are not available.**
