The name Whistler conjures, along with a mental image of his mother, the perception of a witty, irascible dandy quick to pounce on anyone who stood in his way.
His radical style of painting in the 1860s ultimately changed the course of Western Art but at the time attracted much scornful ridicule – he fought back with equal venom creating much ill will and many life-long enemies.
In examining his works, particularly ‘Nocturnes’, ‘Arrangements’, ‘Harmonies’ the lecture will chart his development as a painter as well as his endless feuds.
Jennifer is an experienced guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, is a visiting lecturer at both Goldsmith and Birkbeck and is a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University.
