What to expect at the event?
We would like to invite you all to our April 2026 Outing at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest located at 6220 Forest Road, Martinsville, Indiana 46151. We will be meeting at the Cherry Lake Pavilion, which is located at the end of the service road at the southern edge of the Forestry Office on Saturday at 9:00 AM and on Sunday at 10:00 AM where we will head out to the creeks to find some gold. If you don't have any equipment, feel free to attend, we will have plenty of equipment you can borrow. The Indiana State Forest’s do require a gold panning permit which is available by contacting the Forestry Office. Please make sure to request your gold panning permit either by email at [email protected] or via phone at 765-792-4654. These permits are good for one year from the issue date and are specific to each location. We will be available all day at the Cherry Lake Pavilion for anyone with questions.
Morgan-Monroe State Forest covers 24,000 acres of hills and glacial drifts that contain gold. The state forest does limit the types of equipment that you are permitted to use while on state owned property. You will be limited to small garden trowels, classifiers, sucker tubes, the Gold Rush Nugget Bucket, the Gold-n-Sand hand dredge or similar hand dredge, and gold pans. I personally like the two State Forest pan only events because it gives you a chance to hone your prospecting skills and to connect with the creeks and really learn how gold flows and is deposited in the stream bed. The other reason I really enjoy these events is because of the ability to really learn how to pan for gold, all gold prospecting starts and ends with a pan, so we all need to hone our skills of panning.
We will be having a short meeting at 5:00 PM on Saturday at the Cherry Lake Pavilion where we will have a gold nugget drawing along with other prospecting related items that will be given away.
