Summary:
The disruption of a global pandemic has had a profound impact on the education, achievement, and attainment of all pupils in all schools, in particular in literacy development (oracy, reading, writing). This project developed from a desire to ensure that children were encouraged to sustain and develop their reading skills, in tandem with efforts to accelerate progress in reading attainment. It was felt that the current focus on the introduction of new phonics teaching programmes and curriculums had resulted in a limiting of the approaches used to develop reading and a restricting of the broad rich reading diet necessary for the effective development of life-long literacy practices. In addition, the increasing recognition of the social, emotional and psychological impact of the COVID19 pandemic on both children and staff placed an additional impetus on leaders to ensure the clearly recognized therapeutic benefits of reading and reading for pleasure could be harnessed.
Building on the success of the group’s work over the last two years, this year’s focus will be on embedding a reading for pleasure knowledge and skills progression and moving to look at writing for pleasure.
Outcomes:
• To further develop and refine the Reading for Pleasure formative assessment leading to publication.
• To sustain and further develop RfP activities in primary schools, leading to the establishment of recognized Centres of Excellence (as evidenced by publications and national recognition)
• To translate reading for pleasure practices and principles into writing for pleasure and purpose, with a view to developing and sustaining effective writing practices in primary schools.
• To continue to provide a forum for leaders to engage with recent publications and research around the development of reading and writing.
