This field trip is Part 2 of our group's Exploration of Flight Trips. (The Exploration of Flight Trips Part 1 is taking place May 13, 2025 at Lakeland Linder Airport).
What is Included:

1- STEM Curriculum - Interactive Presentations and Demonstrations led by iFLY STEM Educator
Physics demonstration in the wind tunnel
Classroom Experiment to Predict and Measure Wind Tunnel Speeds
Career Matching Game
Pre & Post- Field trip activities to complete at home!

2- Flying Instruction & Safety Training, followed by TWO Flights.
Students will be with an instructor one-on-one in the flight tunnel throughout their flight.

There are STEM specific programs for Elementary, Middle, and High School Level Learners.

Elementary ---
During field trips, students will witness flight instructors interacting with objects in the wind tunnel and discuss how the size, shape and weight of an object affects its speed in the tunnel. They’ll also learn how to:
Examine the physical attributes of the objects used in the demonstration.
Rank the objects from least to greatest mass and then from least to greatest frontal area.
Predict the order the objects will fly from slowest to fastest wind speed.
Observe and describe the behavior of a variety of objects in the wind tunnel.
Recognize that water will separate into droplets when poured into the wind.
Compare predictions to actual outcomes and discuss any differences.

Middle School ---
During field trips, middle school students will watch flight instructors interacting with objects in the wind tunnel. They’ll also have a chance to predict how fast each object will fly, test their predictions, and discuss the results. Some of the STEM activities middle school kids will focus on include:
Examine the physical attributes of the objects used in the demonstration.
Compare objects with same mass but different frontal area and same frontal area but different mass.
Estimate the terminal velocity of each object.
Observe and describe the behavior of a variety of objects in the wind tunnel.
Recognize that water will separate into droplets as the wind breaks the cohesive force of surface tension.
Record the terminal velocity for each object, compare predictions to actual outcomes and discuss any differences.

High School---
During field-trips, students will learn how to predict their own terminal velocity using measurements and algebraic reasoning. They’ll have a chance to fly in the wind tunnel and compare their predictions to their actual terminal velocity before brainstorming reasons for any errors. Some of the concepts and STEM activities high school students will discuss include:
Examine the physical attributes of the objects used in the demonstration.
Rank the objects from least to greatest mass and then from least to greatest frontal area.
Predict which objects will fly at faster velocities and justify your predictions with evidence.
Observe and describe the behavior of a variety of objects in the wind tunnel.
Recognize that water will separate into droplets when poured into the wind and those droplets have a terminal velocity based on their mass and frontal area.
Record the terminal velocity for each object, compare predictions and discuss any differences.
