About this Event
Join us for the IDS Annual Lecture 2026 delivered by world-renowned political economist and author Prof Jason Hickel. His lecture will discuss ‘Capitalism, ecology, and class struggle in the 21st century’, confronting the challenge of how we can increase prosperity for all and protect the planet at the same time?
In his lecture, Jason Hickel will confront the deadly paradox that the capitalist world economy has us trapped in: on the one hand, we have massive amounts of production globally to the point of blowing past several planetary boundaries and driving dangerous ecological breakdown, yet billions of people remain deprived of access to basic goods and services. Hickel asks, how can this double crisis be overcome? How can we realise rapid development and ensure good lives for all 8 billion people while achieving ecological objectives at the same time?
The talk will draw from Jason Hickel’s research which focuses on global inequality and ecological economics, and follows his hugely successful books: Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World (Penguin, 2020) and The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions (Penguin, 2017).
Speaker: Jason Hickel, ICREA Professor at the Institute for Environmental Science & Technology (ICTA) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Chair: Prof Anu Joshi, Director, IDS.
