Identifying Regional Frogs by Sight & Sound

with Patrick Brannon

Friday, April 3 | 1 - 3 pm

BRN- Elective

A relatively simple and effective citizen-science project is the seasonal monitoring of calling frogs. Different species call from early spring through late summer. Changes in the types, numbers, or calling times may be indicative of global climate change or other environmental effects. Participants will be presented with a lecture on the biology of regional frogs, including species identification by sight and sound. Afterwards, students will practice their identification skills by listening to recordings of calling frogs. Weather permitting, we may venture to the Arboretum pond to observe frog species.

Patrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. For the past 22 years he was Outreach Coordinator at the WCU Highlands Biological Station, where he taught courses on amphibians and mammals as part of the UNC Institute for the Environment Program at HBS, in addition to many K-12 school programs and educator workshops.
