This April, the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture is proud to present RAÍZ Y RESISTENCIA, a group exhibition by IDEAL PDX, an artist collective based in Portland, Oregon. Curated by IDEAL PDX’s Creative Art Director Jessica Lagunas, the exhibition will feature the artwork of 13 collective members, including an original mural on 511 Gallery’s east wall by muralists Mariel del Rincón and Oliver Casillas, new animal bone pyrography sculpture by Eduardo Cruz, and exhibiting work by Santiago Savi made while in his art residence at Mullowney Printing in Portland.

RAÍZ Y RESISTENCIA emerges during a time of significant social and political pressure to share lived experiences of migration, ancestry, labor, joy, grief, and survival—anchored in cultural memory while facing the present. Through their creative output and shared interests, the collective aims to assert visibility, dignity, and creative power. RAÍZ Y RESISTENCIA brings together the voices of a collective, showcasing the work of 13 artists whose resistance is expressed through their cultural roots, as reflected in their art.

Jessica Lagunas is a Mexican-born, Portland-based mixed media artist, curator, and cultural leader. She is the Founder and Creative Director of IDEAL PDX, a collective dedicated to uplifting Latino artists and creating meaningful cultural experiences through art. As a curator, Jessica has led important community exhibitions, including Las Adelitas (2021), Plaza Esperanza (2024), Ajúa – Íconos de Nuestra Gente at Stelo Gallery, and the artist residency and Tributo a mis Muertos exhibition at Mulloney Printing (2025). She currently serves as the Creative Art Director of IDEAL PDX and curated RAÍZ Y RESISTENCIA.

IDEAL PDX is a collective born in 2010 out of a need to bring together a community connected by a shared purpose: to create, share, and uplift art. What began as a vision to unite artists has grown into a vibrant network dedicated to strengthening community through creativity and collaboration.

At its core, IDEAL PDX exists to unify communities, nurture artists’ careers, and create opportunities for professional development. We actively seek new spaces—both traditional and unconventional—where art can be shared, experienced, and celebrated.

Through exhibitions, residencies, workshops, and public art projects, IDEAL PDX supports artists while building bridges across cultures and generations. Our work centers community voices, encourages creative exchange, and opens doors for artists to grow, connect, and thrive.
