Supporting Body Image Healing: A Trauma-Informed, Inclusive Approach for Clients In All Body Types
Presented by: Alyssa Booth, LPC
Presentation Description:
This presentation will explore the complex relationship between trauma, body image, and weight stigma, focusing on how therapists can better support clients, especially those in larger bodies. Drawing on trauma-informed care principles, the Health at Every Size (HAES) framework, and intuitive eating practices, therapists will leave with practical strategies to create a safe, inclusive, and empowering therapeutic space to help clients heal their relationship with their body.
We will address the unique challenges faced by larger-bodied individuals, including societal weight bias, internalized fatphobia, and the intersection of trauma and body image struggles. Therapists will gain tools to challenge harmful cultural narratives, foster body neutrality or acceptance, and help clients build resilience and trust in their bodies.
Objectives:
- Understand how trauma impacts client’s relationship with the body
- Recognize the impact of fatphobia and weight stigma in body image healing
- Learn 3 ways to be more inclusive in your approach to body image
