Working with Neurodivergent Patients with Eating Disorders

Presentation Description:

The presentation will begin with an introduction to neurodivergent diagnoses, such as ADHD and Autism. Key traits associated with these diagnoses will be discussed along with how neurodivergent traits can impact a person\'s psychological and nutritional wellbeing. Research on the co-occurrence with neurodivergence and eating disorders will be shared. Then given more and more patients are seeking treatment for an eating disorder with neurodivergent traits, treatment recommendations will be given regarding how to provide individualized weight-neutral nutritional interventions and compassionate therapeutic interventions to support positive outcomes.

Objectives:

Participants will be able list at least three considerations impacting the clinical or nutrition status of some neurodivergent patients with eating disorders.
Participants will be able to name two possible barriers to treatment that are unique to neurodivergent patients.
Participants will be able to list three clinical and/or nutrition interventions to support neurodivergent patients in their eating disorder recovery process.

About the Speaker:

Jennifer Vittitow received her degree in nutrition from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005 and completed a dietetic internship in North Carolina in 2006. She then went into private practice as a registered dietitian, joining Eating Recovery Center in 2015. In 2021, she became the Regional Director of Nutrition for ERC’s South Region. She is thankful to play a role in ERC’s mission to help patients recover while working with experienced and supportive clinicians. Jennifer finds joy in educating the dietitians on her team, and patients’ families, friends and caregivers, about how to provide the very best support to those in treatment and recovery.
