About the story: In the intense final moments of the 2003 High School Ultimate Frisbee National Tournament, the Amherst Hurricanes appear poised to clinch victory over reigning champions Paideia Gruel. But a controversial self-officiated foul call threatens their win.

I Was a Hurricane is a three-part documentary miniseries that explores the pivotal moments that shape young boys into men, delving into the challenges, triumphs, and lasting impact of high-stakes competition. The series explores community, resilience, and what it truly means to grow—not just to win.

Be the force driving indie filmmaking forward.

Lexi Jamieson Marsh is a documentary filmmaker, writer, and founder of On Your Feet Entertainment. Her work celebrates the human spirit, creating a platform for inspirational voices to be heard. Lexi’s filmography includes The Bearded Lady Project: Challenging the Face of Science, Player of the Week, and I Was a Hurricane, which is currently in post-production.

Lexi is a three-time alumna of the Cindependent Film Festival, where she first screened her documentary The Bearded Lady Project during the festival’s second year. That early experience fundamentally reshaped her view of film festivals, centering community and connection as their highest purpose. She will return to Cindependent in 2026 for her third year on the curation team.

I Was a Hurricane is a documentary twenty years in the making, brought to life entirely by independent filmmakers.

Independent films survive because of community. They exist because people choose to show up, affirming that certain stories are worth telling. By attending this event, you’re more than a spectator, you’re actively championing I Was a Hurricane, helping ensure the story is told authentically and without compromise. There is no better embodiment of that commitment than Cindependent.

If you can’t come to the screening, you can still make a big difference by donating directly to the project today.
