Poetry reading and book release! My book, I Have Brought You a Severed Hand, was published in Arabic by Almutawassit a year and a half ago. I decided not to hold the book release until the genocide in Gaza ended.
In the meantime, the book was published in a Dutch translation by Jurgen Maas in Amsterdam. Then, two publishing houses simultaneously released English translations: Action Books in the U.S. and Divided Publishing in London and Brussels. Next came the German translation by Karl Rauch Verlag. Most recently, Ars et Vita in Brazil published a Portuguese translation.
Yet, I kept postponing the book's release, telling myself that I would wait until the genocide was over.
Recently, I realized that every act by the Palestinian people—no matter how ordinary or small it may seem—is a form of resistance to the ongoing genocide. Living, speaking, writing, loving, carrying forward memories and traditions, refusing silence, and even simply remaining present in a world that continually tries to erase them are all forms of resistance.
I'm hosting a book release event with friends and other wonderful people at the Spore Initiative on October 4.
Emily Dische-Becker will moderate a discussion with me and the poets Lubi Barre, Emet Ezell, Bill Martin, Beatrice Martini, and Charlotte Thissen. They will read the English translations, which will have German subtitles.
All are welcome!
