About this Event
Based on research undertaken for the 150th anniversary of the Paris Commune in 2021, and for Peter Imandt’s bicentenary in 2023, James Barrowman will present on Dundee’s links to the revolutionary period between 1848 and 1871. Peter, the father of journalist Marie Imandt (featured in the AHS book Dundee's Two Intrepid Ladies), was a friend and correspondent of Karl Marx whose activities in 1848 prompted Marx to take a break from writing Capital and travel to Scotland in 1859. David Wemyss Jobson, disgraced dentist to Queen Victoria, then later infamous as a serial litigator, travelled to Paris in 1848 to personally volunteer his services. Finally, in 1871 the events in Paris provoked reaction in the Dundee Press and its aftershocks can be traced in public disputes surrounding the water from the Ladywell and a private banquet held by the town council in honour of the royal wedding.
James Barrowman is a writer, tour guide and hospitality worker. He has contributed poems and articles to the Scottish Left Review, Heckle, Notes from Below, and The National.
