Join us to launch the recently published book Humanitarian Handicraft: History, Materiality and Trade, c. 1840-1980, co-edited by LBU's Dr Helen Dampier; Dr Rebecca Gill and Dr Claire Barber (both University of Huddersfield); and Prof. Bertrand Taithe (University of Manchester):
Manchester University Press - Humanitarian handicraft
The launch will begin with Threads in Common, a participatory textile workshop to explore affective and sensory responses to making textiles in crisis. We will be reimagining the crafting of vibrantly embroidered bags designed by the Bloomsbury set's Omega studio and made by refugee women in France during the First World War. (No experience necessary).
This will be followed by the book launch, with some reflections from the editors about the book's origins in a 2019 exhibition and conference.
Light refreshments will be provided.
